Last year I had a horrid case of achilles tendonitis. For months I was in so much pain that I couldn’t walk from my front door to the end of the block without crying. For 6 weeks I wore what I not-so-lovingly called das Boot. For 4 weeks I faithfully went to physical therapy.
Even now things aren’t quite right with my heel and achilles tendon. Some mornings I wake up and the tendon is screaming at me. On the days when the pain strikes hard and sticks around, I go back to the dreaded das Boot.
I fear that I’ll be out on the trail and my achilles will do something obnoxious. Like rupture. That’ll I’ll be in the backcountry with few others around and no way to get out but to walk out. With a ruptured tendon.
My husband thinks my achilles will rupture before I set out to hike the section of the trail in SW VA. He believes I’ll have to put everything off for at least a year.
That’s my fear too.
